'One Love Jamaica Village' in New Kingston


UPDATE: The One Love Village was cancelled on March 19 due to a lack of participation from visitors.
As part of the activities surrounding the 2007 Cricket World Cup, 'One Love Jamaica Village' will be set up at the Cable and Wireless Golf Academy and the National Housing Trust (NHT) car park in New Kingston from March 12 to 24, to accommodate locals and visitors, especially on 'off match' days. The event will feature food and craft vendors and live concerts on March 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22. Live cricket will be shown on big screens and partcipants will have access to a wireless internet hub. The official press release can be read here.
The Social Development Commission (SDC) is one of the sponsors of the event and will be hosting several cultural and cricketing activities throughout the days and evenings. The SDC will operate an area for Community Exposition. In this area communities will display community related development projects, activities and initiatives which also includes art and craft. The area will also accommodate artificial pitches in order to put on a kiddies “wind ball” cricket clinic and/or competition. This will include clinics with some of the “Cricket Greats” and a competition between community teams on March 17th and 18th. During the days SDC in coordination with JCDC, will use the centre stage to drive a series of Lunch time entertainment and cultural activities in the village.
