Hurricane Dean Treatens

Administrator's picture

As of 8 pm today, Friday August 17, Hurricane Dean has grown to a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 135 mph. The projected path of the storm takes it directly over Jamaica on Sunday afternoon, although Jamaica should experience storm conditions from as early as Saturday night/Sunday morning. The storm is to be treated seriously and residents are urged to prepare as best as possible for the storm, which could have maximum sustained winds of 150 mph or more when it approaches Jamaica, according to Weather Underground. A list of useful items for a hurricane safety kit is provided here.

In the event that a shelter is needed, the nearest available ODPEM shelter for New Kingston residents will be at the National Arena. Other relatively close shelters will be at the Half Way Tree primary school and the Melrose Primary and Junior High in Half Way Tree.

The good news about the storm is that the wind field is small. In other words the hurricane force winds (>74mph) extends a relatively small distance from the centre of the storm, as shown in this diagram. So a small shift off its direct course with Jamaica will greatly minimise of the impact of the storm.

All are encouraged to take the necessary steps to stay safe and to look out for your neighbour as the storm approaches. A document with safety tips is available here.
